We enter into the class with full of energy and motivation that drive us to make effective classroom delivery. However, when we start delivering of our class we find few of our students giving no attention and keep chatting among them despite our repeated requests and commands. We feel disrespected, our ego gets hurt and we become de-motivated, and as a result of that we tend to become frustrated and start shouting and yelling students.
It all leads to hostility in the classroom. Sometimes out of anger few teachers end up beating students or abusing and scolding them. Some stop teaching till students maintain pin drop silence in the class. The whole classroom ambience becomes a hostile zone!
Well, if I ask any of the teachers whether he or she would love to teach in such atmosphere, definitely the answer would be a big ‘no’. So, relax teacher! Here I would like to share few of my tips that would probably help you in avoiding such classroom ambience. And following them would help you to smartly keep your students engaged and focused in your class.
- Set up class rules:
Your school has just opened and new academic session in your school just started and here the most important thing you need to do is to set up your class rule. Unless you make such rules in your class, you cannot expect your students to behave the way you want. Ensure you set up such rules after mutually discussing with your students. Try to ask suggestions from your students so that they feel participated, contributed and they are the ones who are supposed to follow. One of the most commonly felt class rules is “Don’t talk when teacher teaches in the class.” There should be consequences as well for those who don’t adhere to these set rules which are equally applicable for all in the class.
- Use class energizers
As a teacher you always want your students to be energetic, participative, responsible and responsive, right? But the truth is you cannot expect all the students to be the same. Few of them may look dull, withdrawn and less attentive. So, what to do? There is a saying if a teacher becomes energetic, the whole class becomes energetic. Hence, as a teacher you need to show your energy first and then they will take that energy into them. Therefore, you must use class energizers. One of the best energizers include “One, Two! Eyes on you!” Teacher will explain when he loudly say one-two, students need to respond saying “eyes on you” with a condition of looking at teacher’s eye.
So, the idea is that when teacher finds any of the students not properly giving attention, he can quickly use that energizer and on doing so he will regain students’ attention again thus putting them on the track again.
- Prepare lesson plan
The teacher mustn’t ever enter into the class without lesson plan. A lesson plan must have a proper plan for the teacher about the goal of the lesson which means what skill students will gain after the class. There should be a clear purpose and way of delivering the class such as how teacher will introduce new concept, what activities will be there in the class to joyfully engage students and lastly there should be guided practice and individual practice as part of assessment. Then in the end the teacher will give home works to students.
- Build strong bonding with Students
It is very important for the teachers to establish great rapport or bonding with students. It helps in effective classroom delivery and eases out the fear and hostility of the class. Teachers will know, understand and sympathize students that will further drive them to tirelessly teach with great motivational level. The students will also be able to freely ask and share their issues and challenges with teachers. Now you would probably ask how to make such strong bonding with students, right? Well, for that I will again make one dedicated post especially for it.
